Ground Loop Hum: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Ground loop hum in audio systems is caused by circulating electrical current between two or more components that share more than one path to ground. It shows up as a steady 50 or 60 Hz hum through the speakers, and it's the most common noise complaint in hi-fi systems.

The usual explanation stops there. But the specific cause that catches most people out, and that most guides skip, is simpler than it sounds: mismatched chassis grounding between components.

The cause most guides miss: mismatched chassis grounding

Mismatched chassis grounding happens when one component in a system is earthed through a standard IEC power cable while another runs on a two-wire power supply with no earth connection at all, leaving its chassis electrically floating.

Modern systems mix equipment with different power supply designs constantly. Bigger amplifiers and power components usually use IEC earthed cables. Smaller gear, DACs, streamers, phono stages, often doesn't.

Connect a grounded component to a floating one with a signal cable, and you've built exactly the conditions a ground loop needs. The floating chassis slowly accumulates a small electrical charge just from normal operation and the surrounding electromagnetic environment. With nowhere else to go, that charge finds its way out through the RCA cable shield, usually the negative leg, into the grounded component, across its chassis, and back around through whatever other cables connect the two. That loop is your hum source.

It tends to sit around 50 to 70 Hz, and it's most obvious standing close to the speakers in a quiet room, right when you're not playing anything.


How to diagnose a ground loop

Diagnosing a ground loop means isolating which pair of connected components shares an unwanted second ground path, then confirming it by process of elimination. Work through it in this order:

  1. Isolate one component at a time. Disconnect everything except a source and the amplifier. If the hum's gone, reconnect components one by one until it comes back. Whatever you just added is involved in the loop.
  2. Check the power supply type on each piece of gear. Look at the power connector. IEC with three pins means earthed. A simple two-wire cable or wall wart usually means floating. A grounded piece talking to a floating piece is the pattern to watch for.
  3. Listen for frequency. A steady 50 or 60 Hz hum (or double that) almost always means ground loop. A more random buzz or crackle usually points somewhere else, a bad connection, interference from a nearby device, or a faulty cable.
  4. Check your wall outlets. An outlet with a poor or missing earth connection destabilizes the whole system's reference point, not just one component. If you've ruled out equipment and the hum persists, this is worth checking with an outlet tester before you touch anything else.

Once you've found which pair of components is involved, you know where the loop actually lives, and that's most of the battle.


How to fix a ground loop

The most reliable fix for a ground loop is giving every component in the system a single, shared ground reference instead of letting each one find its own path to ground. This is usually called star grounding.
